Methodology

The main objective of this website is to provide users with a way to discover municipalities of the Spanish geography, based on an automated system that recommends the closest municipality in Spain to the user's preferences; either through a survey, or by calculating the similarity between municipalities.

For this purpose, 78 variables have been automatically collected for each of the 8,131 municipalities in Spain, including statistical, demographic, socio-economic, health, educational, real estate, climate, Internet coverage, labor market, available services or the main characteristics of the area, among others.

All data have been collected in the second half of 2022, and refer to the most recent data available as of that date, with the following dates being different from that collection date:

  • Average gross income by municipality, pertaining to the year 2019.
  • Broadband coverage by municipality, pertaining to the year 2020.

In general, a municipality is considered to be near the coast if its province is coastal, with the intervals available in the survey varying according to the approximate distance by road to the nearest Spanish coast. Similarly, a municipality has been considered to be close to the mountains if the main Spanish mountain systems are located in its province: Cordilleras Béticas, Cordillera Cantábrica, Cordillera Costero-Catalana, Canary Islands, Macizo Galaico, Meseta Central, Pirineos, Sistema Central and Sistema Ibérico, using the next interval of the questionnaire for municipalities in whose province other minor systems are found, such as those of the Balearic Islands, Sierra Morena, Montes de Toledo or Montes de León, and using the next available intervals according to the approximate road distance to the nearest mountain system.

The temperatures and precipitation collected correspond to the averages of the historical data calculated for the maximum, minimum and average values during the months of February and July in each municipality.

The coverage available in a municipality is calculated as the average of the coverage available in all the territories (singular entities) associated with it, for which the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transition has provided data.

The presence or absence of "nature and places to disconnect" in the questionnaire is evaluated by the presence of "nature", "leisure", or "activity" type places in the top 3 of the places found in that municipality. Similarly, the presence or absence of "stores and services" in the questionnaire is evaluated by the presence of places of type "trade", "service" or "hotel" in the top 3 of the places found in that municipality.

In all the ranges of the questionnaire, the end(s) of the corresponding interval is included, for example: "Municipalities with less than 10,000 inhabitants" includes municipalities with 10,000 inhabitants, analogously to the example below ("Municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants").

The term "schools" includes indistinctly "schools and institutes" (primary and secondary education centers), since the Ministry of Education data do not make this distinction.

For the municipalities of Castilla y León, the cultural agenda includes events within a radius of 10 kilometers.

The data extraction has been carried out in an automated way, and the result has not been supervised or checked with other sources individually for each municipality or singular entity, due to the massive size of the dataset.
